Under boos at the weigh-in, Werdum faces Velasquez and guarantees: 'There can only be one champion, and it will be me'

The protagonists of UFC 188 passed, this Friday (12), the last test before stepping into the octagon set up in Mexico City. At the official weigh-in of the event, Fabricio Werdum e Cain Velazquez confirmed the main fight of the attraction, which will put the definitive heavyweight title at stake.

Against Velasquez, Werdum will fight to break the historical taboo of interim champions

The Brazilian stepped on the scale amid boos from the Mexican fans, and weighed 107,6 kg. Then, Velasquez, highly applauded by the public, was just over two kilos heavier. The two stared at each other fixedly and only greeted each other with a slight nod of the head.

In an interview given shortly after the weigh-in, Werdum, speaking in Spanish, sent a message to the fans. “I would like to thank everyone, but there can only be one [champion] here, and that guy will be me”, said the Brazilian, ignoring the boos.

Afterwards, Velasquez, also in Spanish, told the crowd: “It's a dream to fight here in front of all of you, and I'm going to win for all of you”, he declared, to great applause.

The athletes in the second most important fight of the night showed that the rivalry between them is at its peak. Gilbert Melendez and Eddie Alvarez, who weighed exactly the same, at 70,7 kg, stared at each other blankly as they stepped off the scale. The two even exchanged provocations, being briefly restrained by UFC president, Dana White. The Mexican fans went crazy.

All 22 athletes who will participate in the UFC 188 card had no problems hitting the weight limit for their categories. The fight night, on Saturday, will start at 20 pm official Brasília time.
