The climate between Fabricio Werdum e Cain Velazquez got heated up in the week leading up to the highly anticipated fight between the two. The Brazilian, however, minimized the entire controversy and said he saw no problems with recent events, highlighting that he “only spoke the truth” about the champion.

It all started when Werdum stated that Velasquez “was an American wanting to be Mexican.” The linear champion did not like the statement and refused to greet the Brazilian during breakfast at the hotel where they are both staying.
In an interview with the North American website “MMA Fighting”, Werdum stated that he does not regret what he said. “He didn’t shake my hand, but I only told the truth. I just said that he was born in the United States, but his parents are from Mexico. He just said that. I didn't say anything bad about him. It was professional, not personal. He didn’t like it and didn’t want to shake my hand, but that’s okay,” he explained.
Werdum also responded to statements from Velasquez's coach, Javier Mendez, who insisted that the Brazilian will have no chance in the fight. “I know Javier said a lot of things, but I don't think he's confident. He never says anything, but in this fight, he said a lot. Why? Because maybe he lacks confidence. That’s what I think”, he assessed.
The fight between Velasquez and Werdum will be the main attraction of UFC 188, which will be held this Saturday (13), in Mexico City.
