Werdum provokes Velasquez: 'American who thinks he's Mexican'

Brazilian made fun of the fact that his rival at UFC 188 was considered a "darling" by the Mexican public, but was born in the USA

Son of a Mexican father and an American mother, but of Latin descent, the lineal heavyweight champion Cain Velazquez It's Ultimate's biggest bet to conquer the Mexican market once and for all. However, the fact that Velasquez was born in California (USA) ended up becoming a reason for jokes and provocations on the part of the Brazilian. Fabricio Werdum, interim champion of the 120 kg division and Cain's opponent next Saturday (13), at UFC 188.

During the first episode of the “Embedded UFC 188” video series, featuring behind-the-scenes footage of the event, Werdum appeared talking to a Mexican fan in a restaurant. When asked by her about when he would fight and who would be her opponent, the Brazilian didn't miss the chance to needle his rival. “I'm going to fight here (in Mexico) on June 13th. It will be against (Cain) Velasquez: an American who thinks he is Mexican (laughs)”, he said.

Previously, “Vai Cavalo”, as he is known, had already said that he felt “more Mexican” than his rival, thanks to his work as a Spanish-language analyst for the UFC Network channel. “I receive a lot of messages (from Mexican fans) on social media. I'm happy for the Mexicans. I’ve been to Mexico more than 20 times and, in fact, I feel more Mexican than Cain Velásquez (laughs)”, said Werdum, to the website “Indiscutido”.

This Saturday (13), Werdum and Velasquez duel in front of the Mexican public for the unification of the interim and linear UFC heavyweight belts. The duel will be the main fight of UFC 188, which will have as its co-main event the fight between two Americans of Latin origin: Eddie Alvarez and Gilbert Melendez.
