Considered to this day as the fighter who gave the most work to Jon Jones inside the octagon, Alexander Gustafson reacted with sadness to the news that the American had his title stripped due to the problems he was involved in last weekend. The Swede considers it “tragic” the fact that other fighters will not have the chance to face the now former champion for the belt.

Last weekend, Jones was involved in a car accident in the city of Albuquerque, in the United States. The athlete crossed a red light and hit a car driven by a pregnant woman. “Bones” fled the scene on foot, without providing assistance, and therefore had to explain himself to the police.

In a video published on his Facebook account, Gustafsson praised Jones' skills, but, precisely for that reason, he regretted that the champion was deposed without even actually being defeated. “I want to say he is the best in the world, he is the champion and he is the best fighter pound for pound. Of that, there is no doubt. But it's also very tragic because all the fighters are working very hard to be in a position to face him for the title and become world champion,” he commented.

The Swede, however, supported Ultimate's decision. “I think the UFC did the right thing. It was the only thing they could do, because Jon Jones He has done a lot of things and always got away with it. So how far would he go? This is a favor to him. This shows that this is not acceptable while you are the champion. You need to represent the sport well, be an example for children”, he added.

The UFC light heavyweight belt is currently vacant. The new champion will be announced at UFC 187, when Anthony Johnson, who is coming off a victory over Gustafsson, will face Daniel Cormier. The Swede, who lost to Jones in a close fight in 2013, is looking to recover against Glover Teixeira, in June.
