Organizing an event at Madison Square Garden has been a longtime desire for the UFC, and White is confident that the dream is getting closer to becoming a reality. “We already have the reservation on the date”, said the director.
According to White, if UFC 194 actually takes place in the “Big Apple”, the organization will put together a historic card. “You can already imagine that there will be several fighters from New York on this card. We do this in every market we reach. Plus, because it's the first event at MSG, we know it's these guys' dream to fight there,” he added. Two of the biggest UFC stars today, Jon Jones e Chris Weidman, are natives of New York.
The process of legalizing MMA in New York has been making progress in recent years. Recently, the current UFC bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey, met with the state governor, Andrew Cuomo, to discuss the legalization of the sport. The final decision should take place approximately in June, when the matter will be discussed in the legislative assembly.
