In March 2014, Peña was scheduled to face Brazilian Jéssica “Bate Estaca” Andrade at UFC 171. However, the fighter suffered a serious knee injury during training, tearing the anterior cruciate, medial collateral and lateral collateral ligaments, in addition to of having injured the meniscus and a tendon. The injuries were the result of hyperextension – that is, when the knee “bends” to the side opposite to its natural movement.
