Duels between knights in the Middle Ages can be considered distant ancestors of modern combat sports. However, in Russia, the MMA event “M-1 Global” believes that there is still room in the professional world for clashes between warriors wearing chain mail, armor and helmets with their swords and shields. After the success of some exhibition fights, promoted during card breaks, the organization will institute a new series of tournaments entitled “M-1 Medieval”.

According to the president of “M-1”, Vadim Finkelchtein, known for also being the manager of the legendary former PRIDE champion Fedor Emelianenko, public interest was fundamental for the establishment of the new modality. “The public’s reaction was really cool. So I thought it was worth continuing. At that time, the fights were to entertain the public during fight breaks. But if we find enough riders, we will have specific shows, with weight categories, title fights and champions, said the president of the organization”, he guaranteed, without being afraid to be bold in his plans.
Fights between medieval knights are not exactly new and already take place around the planet, but in large open spaces and in conditions that resemble, even remotely, the scenario of the time. The great innovation on the part of “M-1 Medieval” is the holding of duels in a ring, uniting combatants from the Middle Ages with the structure of contemporary sports.
In Finkelchtein's opinion, “Medieval MMA” has everything to become even more popular with fans, as it has all the ingredients of the conventional modality and more possibilities, due to the enormous apparatus involved. “It’s similar to MMA. You can punch, kick and knock down. But because there are swords and shields in addition to the armor, everything looks more impressive and exciting,” he analyzed.
The next “M-1 Medieval” event takes place on April 10th, during the M-1 Challenge 56, in Moscow. There is still no official announcement for the start of valid disputes for tournaments between medieval knights.
