In April 2014, Spong was injured in a similar way to what happened to Anderson Silva few months earlier. Facing Gokhan Saki in a kickboxing fight, valid for the renowned Glory organization, the Suriname-born Dutchman saw his leg broken in half after having a kick saved.

After undergoing surgery and months of physical therapy, Spong returned to compete in an event in Berlin, Germany. A few minutes into the fight, Spong, nicknamed “King of the Ring”, cornered Farkas on the ropes and, taking advantage of his rival's low guard, delivered a well-aimed right cross.

This was the professional boxing debut of Spong, a kickboxing veteran (where he has 74 wins, seven losses, one draw and one no-contest) and who has two MMA fights on his resume, with two wins. Farkas continues to have a largely negative record in professional boxing – he now has just seven wins, compared to 35 defeats and six draws.
