The recent doping controversy involving Anderson Silva still resonates in the world of MMA. Fabricio Werdum, interim UFC heavyweight champion, believes that the episode will have negative consequences not only for the fighter, but also for the sport as a whole, due to the great representation of “Spider” in the public eye.

Anderson, who returned to the UFC after more than a year away against Nick Diaz, last month, tested positive for two tests: one on January 9th, with anabolic steroids, and another on the day of the fight, with anabolic steroids and anxiolytics. The final judgment in his case is expected to take place next month, which will possibly result in a suspension, fine and the annulment of the victory against Diaz.

With his always sincere way of expressing himself, Werdum did not mince words when commenting on the case in an interview with the “Combate” channel website. “That stained, stained. Everyone knew Anderson in one way and, suddenly, this happened. There was great expectation, coming back after a year... It was a shock, because Anderson is known all over the world. It also shook the image of the sport, which took a long time to build. It got in the way a little. People who don't understand much, who are against the sport, say that MMA is a lie, that guys take drugs, but not everyone does. I speak for myself, I've never taken it, but I can't speak for others. You can see it from my body. I’m a big guy, but I’m not very strong, ripped”, he analyzed.

Werdum remembered the old statement given by Anderson, who stated that fighters caught using anabolic steroids should not compete. “A lot of people were disappointed with Anderson, precisely because he said that the guy he uses should be banned from the sport. Let’s see if he keeps his word.”

However, Werdum considered that recent events do not nullify the former champion's achievements inside the octagon. “Everything Anderson did for the sport cannot be erased because of doping. He fought hard, he was a warrior… He was one of the best in the world, you can’t argue that point”, he concluded.
