Silver in Sydney, Honorato is out of the 2008 Olympics

Owner of an Olympic silver medal, won in Sydney-2000, Carlos Honorato is out of the Beijing Games in 2008. Due to a virus, contracted on Friday night, the judoka withdrew from competing in the national selection, which takes place this Saturday, in Uberlândia (MG).

Honorato competed for the starting and reserve spots in the team with Eduardo Santos and Hugo Pessanha. In this way, the 33-year-old veteran's competitors will compete for the starting spot in the middleweight category (up to 90 kg) during international tournaments in 2008 - Santos won the selective.

Honorato, who also won a bronze medal at the Osaka World Cup in 2003, had not been in a good phase since the Athens Olympics, where he had a disappointing performance and lost two fights to unimpressive opponents.

This year, Honorato was a reserve for the team, but, due to a knee injury to Hugo Pessanha, he won the right to compete in the World Cup, in Rio de Janeiro. However, the judoka from São Paulo did not do well and lost in his first fight, saying goodbye to his chances of a medal.

Before the World Cup, he had been removed by the Brazilian technical committee from the Pan American Games to regain good physical shape. Then, he was replaced by Tiago Camilo, who moved up a category and won gold. Flávio Canto inherited Camilo's place in the welterweight division (up to 81 kg), but was injured in the middle of the competition.

This Saturday's selection defined five more names to compete in the Olympic process. They are Denílson Lourenço (up to 60 kg), Victor Penalber (up to 73 kg), Flávio Canto (up to 81 kg), Leonardo Leite (up to 100 kg) and Walter Santos (over 100 kg).

In the up to 66 kg category, Leandro Cunha was the winner, but will remain as a reserve for the team, as João Derly, world and Pan-American Games champion, had already secured his place in the 2008 Games.

In the women's category, Sarah Menezes (up to 48 kg), Ketleyn Quadros (up to 57 kg), Vânia Ishii (up to 63 kg), Maria Portela (up to 70 kg), Claudirene Cesar (up to 78 kg) qualified to compete for a place in the Olympics. ) and Aline Puglia (over 78 kg). Andressa Fernandes was the winner of the under-52 kg category, but she will be a reserve, as Érika Miranda had already guaranteed her place in Beijing due to having been runner-up in the Pan and fifth in the World Championship.
