Lawler and Hendricks faced each other for the first time in March, in a fight for the title vacated after the retirement of Georges St Pierre. Hendricks won the judges' decision, after five rounds of intense competition. The rematch took place in early December, with Lawler getting revenge and also taking the belt according to the judges' decision.
Precisely because of the intense dispute seen in the two previous fights, Silva confirmed that a trilogy should happen soon. “It’s not official, but it’s very likely. They had the first fight, it was very tough and close. Then they fought again and it was very even again. Some people don't agree with the outcome, so a trilogy makes sense,” he explained. “Of course a fight against Rory also makes sense, but people talk about a rematch so much that they forget that Lawler vs. MacDonald will also be a rematch,” he added.
Silva recalled that a change of plans when choosing a challenger for the belt is nothing new in the UFC. “This is not the first time this has happened. When we bought the WEC, the champion there was supposed to fight the winner of Frankie Edgar x Gray Maynard, but the fight was a draw, [Anthony] Pettis lost to Clay guida and it changed the whole scenario”, he said.
