Mark Hunt arrives at the most important fight of his UFC career as a complete underdog. After all, the New Zealander was called up at the last minute to compete for the interim title against Fabricio Werdum due to injury to Cain Velazquez, so he had a reduced amount of time to train and cut weight.
For this reason, Hunt is out of favor in practically all betting houses for the fight, which indicate a calm favoritism on the part of the Brazilian. However, the veteran is not discouraged by the numbers, as this is not something new in his long career.
“I always try to put positive thoughts in my head. I need. Everyone says negative things and I try to do the opposite. I've done this my whole life and it keeps me going. My entire career I have been the underdog. I was never meant to be where I was. I won the K-1 title when I was a nobody. I'm the underdog, but if anyone can do it, so can I”, said Hunt, in a press conference reproduced by the North American website “MMA Fighting”.
However, even if he wins the fight against Werdum, Hunt will not consider himself the UFC champion. “It’s not a title. The only belt I want to put around my waist is that of a champion, and that is in Cain's possession. So if I win, I won't put the belt on – I'll put it on my shoulders. The only belt I want is the champion’s belt, which is with Cain”, he assessed.
The fight between Werdum and Hunt will be the main attraction of UFC 180, this Saturday (15), in the Octagon's debut on Mexican territory.
