The Nicaraguan, one of the most eccentric figures in world boxing, surprised and defeated the American Fernando Vargas on points after twelve rounds this evening, at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
Mayorga (28-6-1, 22 KOs) knocked down Vargas (26-5, 22 KOs) twice, in the first and eleventh rounds. The scores were as follows: 114-112, 115-111 for Mayorga and 113-113.
With his third consecutive defeat (he had lost twice to Shane Mosley last year), Vargas could retire from boxing.
Mayorga has given new momentum to his career after his defeat to Oscar De La Hoya last year.
