Vitor belfort didn't like the news that he would have to wait a few more months to challenge Chris Weidman for the middleweight belt. After the injury that took Weidman out of UFC 181 and forced the postponement of the challenge until 2015, Belfort commented on the situation and even suggested that Ultimate create an interim title, due to the champion's recurrence of injuries on the eve of his fights.

“At first I didn't believe (that the fight would be postponed), after all this is his second title defense fight in a row that had to be postponed due to injury. I think that for every belt holder who gets injured more than once, the UFC should create an interim belt. As a result, the fans, the fighters and the UFC itself would not be harmed, only the injured athlete. I want to fight. This all just gives me more energy and determination to win my third world title in the third different category in the UFC. Every day I feel stronger and more motivated to achieve yet another achievement”, said “Fenômeno”, in an interview with the “Combate” channel website.

When asked what advice he would give to Weidman, as he experienced a similar situation before the fight against Wanderlei Silva in 2012, having fractured his hand and lost the TUF Brasil 1 coaches' duel, Vitor again took the opportunity to needle the champion. “Getting injured is part of every sport, because we train at high performance. But getting injured twice in a row with so little time in your career? They're kidding, right? For me, he wanted to spend Christmas with the belt, and only that way would he be able to do that”, he said.

Originally, Vitor belfort e Chris Weidman they would face each other at UFC 173, in May. However, the Brazilian ended up withdrawing from the fight when the Testosterone Replacement Treatment (TRT), which he was undergoing, was banned by the Nevada Athletic Commission. After Weidman's victory over Lyoto Machida in July, Vitor was again confirmed as a challenger and the fight was scheduled for UFC 181, in December. However, with the champion's broken hand, the fight ended up being postponed until 2015, possibly at UFC 184, in February.
