After defeat at UFC Brasília, Pezão undergoes surgery to remove tumor

The Brazilian's surgery will be in the pituitary region; fighter believes he will be medically discharged in less than a week

In the week leading up to the UFC Brasilia, held on September 13th, Antonio Pezão had already commented on the possibility of undergoing surgery after the event. After being knocked out by Andrei Arlovski In the main fight of the night in the federal capital, the heavyweight opted to undergo the surgical procedure almost immediately and will undergo surgery to remove a pituitary tumor this Tuesday (23).

This is the second time that Pezão has undergone a medical intervention of this type. In 2006, the fighter also removed a benign tumor in the region resulting from acromegaly – a syndrome caused by increased production of growth hormone secretion, also known as “gigantism”. According to the fighter himself, in an interview with the “MMA Fighting” website, the recovery time from surgery should be less than a week and it is possible that he will be discharged next Monday (29).

At 35 years old, Antônio Silva, “Pezão”, has a professional record of 18 wins, six losses and one draw. The heavyweight's last victory came in February 2013, when he knocked out alistair overeem. Since then, he has been surpassed by Cain Velazquez in the title fight, he drew with Mark Hunt and suffered another setback against Andrei Arlovski. There is still no forecast for Pezão to return to the octagon after surgery.
