Broken leg ten years ago still prevents Anderson Silva from running: “Unbearable pain”

At 48 years old, Spider says he has not fully recovered from his broken leg and feels unbalanced and swollen there.

One of the biggest names in MMA, Anderson Silva revealed that he still suffers the consequences of the fracture in his left leg that he suffered in 2013, in the rematch against Chris Weidman. The former UFC middleweight champion (up to 83,9kg) said that he can no longer run normally and that he feels pain and swelling at the site of the injury.

Anderson Silva, who is 48 years old, said that the recovery was difficult and that he thought he could no longer fight. In an interview with Flow Podcast, Spider said that he returned to training a month after surgery, but that he was afraid of kicking for a long time. He also stated that he has some limitations, but that he can kick and train normally, except for running.

“I can’t run anymore. There is no way to. I feel unbalanced, I feel pain. My leg swells where I broke it. But normal kicks, normal training. Just running isn’t enough,” said Spider.

The Brazilian fighter also reported that it was a clean injury, which did not affect any tendon, just the bone. Anderson said he was lucky he didn't step on the ground after the kick, as that could have caused more damage. He recalled that he felt terrible pain and was in shock at what happened.

“It was a clean injury. She didn't catch any tendons. She only broke a bone. When I kicked, I didn't step on the ground. And, man, there was a movie. I said: 'I don't believe it'. It was terrible. I stopped for a month, but I was in pain for a year,” he said. Anderson Silva, who said she still feels excruciating pain at times.

As middleweight champion, Anderson reigned supreme between 2006 and 2013. Before the fateful fall against Chris Weidman, the fighter accumulated 10 title defenses. Professional in MMA between 1997 and 2020, Silva left the sport after 46 appearances. Throughout his career, the Brazilian accumulated 34 wins, 11 losses and one 'no contest'.

A reference in mixed martial arts, 'Spider' represented the organization between 2006 and 2020. For the company, the fighter starred in emblematic performances, such as winning the middleweight title over Rich Franklin, the 'ball' in front of Forrest griffin, in 2009, the epic turn against Chael Sonnen, in 2010, and the apotheotic knockout against Vitor belfort, in the 'Fight of the Century', in 2011.
