MMA fans accustomed to the traditional pre-fight statistics released by the official UFC broadcast may soon be in for a little surprise, when they come across a new item in the now traditional “Tale of the tape” that precedes each fight in the Octagon. This is because the Ultimate organization decided, together with its official statistics provider “FightMetric”, to also include “kick range” among the items included in the graph.
Currently, the statistics presented before fights are: name, nationality, age, height, weight and punching range. The change comes to align with the requests of several personalities who cover the sport, such as the official UFC commentator Joe Rogan. Furthermore, the change creates a certain distance between boxing and MMA, from which the matrix of information available was inspired, as the modalities have significant differences.
“We already know what punching range is, we know what a considerable discrepancy in punching range is. But what's a big difference in kick range? I have no idea. It's going to take a while for the analytical side to figure out what a good reach is in proportion to what weight class you're in and what the significant disparity is," said FightMetric research analyst Michael Carroll in an interview with the website "MMA Junkie ”.
Despite the announcement and the expectation that the news may generate for fans who are aficionados of information and numbers, the new statistic's debut in the UFC's pre-fight graphics does not yet have a date set.
