It may seem strange, but rock band Kings of Leon played a key role in announcing the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas (USA) as the venue for the rematch between Jon Jones and Gustafsson – for the UFC light heavyweight belt. Host to 28 events for the largest MMA organization on the planet, the hotel and casino was only confirmed as the venue for the reissue of “Fight of the Year 2013” after the rescheduling of a show by the Grammy-winning group that would coincide with the dates of UFC 178 , scheduled for September 27th.
“I really thank MGM Resorts, Live Nation (production company) and Kings of Leon for working together and helping us bring this great fight to Las Vegas”, commented president Dana White, through an official statement. “The first fight between Jon Jones e Alexander Gustafson It was the best light heavyweight fight in UFC history. This next one will be epic!”, added the director.
On September 21, 2013, Jon Jones faced the biggest challenge of his career against Alexander Gustafson. For the first time, Jones lost a round and suffered a fall in the octagon. Despite this, the champion recovered and emerged victorious in the duel held in Canada, which was subsequently awarded the “Fight of the Year 2013” award. Tickets for the highly anticipated rematch go on sale in August and prices range from US$100 (approximately R$220 reais) to US$1.000 (approximately R$2.200).
