The soap opera of a possible fight between alistair overeem e Junior Gypsy is far from over. But if it depends on the Dutchman, the expectation is that she will have a happy ending. Overeem, who has been rumored for a fight against the former heavyweight champion for a few years now, expressed confidence in the fight in the future.
“I'm focused and I really want this fight. I’m very optimistic (that a Cigano fight) will happen and I want it to happen,” said Overeem in an interview with “The MMA Hour” podcast. “I can see this fight against Junior dos Santos happening right after my current fight. I would really like to face Junior”, he added.
In addition to his future plans, “The Reem” also commented on the lessons he learned from his recent losing streak, which ended with the victory over Frank mir in February. According to the Dutchman, from now on you will see a more humble Overeem in the Octagon. “This is the UFC. I'm fighting a 120 kg giant. The guy is huge. Of course, he's going to try to hit me in the head. So, yes, I won’t underestimate anyone,” said the heavyweight, who faces Ben Rothwell at UFC Fight Night 50 in September.
At 34, alistair overeem has a record of 37 wins, 13 losses and one fight without result. The former Strikeforce and DREAM champion arrived in the UFC with a victory over Brock Lesnar in 2011 and would be selected to face Junior Gypsy for the heavyweight title next. However, Overeem failed an anti-doping test and the fight ended up being cancelled, and since then it has always faced problems in coming to fruition.
