UFC champions Ronda Rousey, Chris Weidman e Jon Jones will be the representatives of MMA at the 2014 ESPY Awards, a sports award promoted by the North American broadcaster “ESPN”.
Rousey stands out by competing in two categories. In the “Best Female Athlete” award, the fighter competes with Maya Moore (basketball), Mikaela Shiffrin (alpine skiing) and Breanna Stewart (college basketball). She also competes in the “Best Fighter” category, against Jon Jones and boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao and Andre Ward. Weidman will try for the “Biggest Surprise” award for his knockout victory against Anderson Silva at UFC 162, in July last year.
This will be the fourth consecutive time that Jones will attempt to receive the award, as he has been nominated since 2011. Rousey and Weidman are participating for the first time. Other UFC names have already been nominated, such as Georges St Pierre, Lyoto MachidaRandy Couture Anderson Silva e Edson Barboza, but none emerged victorious.
The award is chosen based on popular voting on the official ESPY Awards website . Votes can be cast until July 16th, which is the same day the awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles (USA).
