When it was founded in 2008, Bellator came up with the slogan “The toughest tournament in sport”. Since then, the organization has had its competition model based on tournament seasons, whose champions earned the right to compete for the belt in their category. However, this format should change soon. After announcing the departure of Bjorn Rebney, president and founder of the organization, Bellator also announced that it intends to leave the established system soon with the transition to its new direction.

“My plan is to move from a tournament format to a more traditional model, a superfight format. We will hold tournaments in situations that make sense. I think tournaments can make sense, but they have to happen at the right time and the fighters have to be the right ones too”, declared Scott Coker, ex-Strikeforce and new CEO of Bellator, in his first interview as head of the new organization, to “MMA Fighting” website.

Currently, two Brazilians hold belts in the organization: Douglas lima, at welterweight, and Dudu Dantas, in bantamweight.
