For many fans, the knee injury suffered by the former welterweight champion Georges St Pierre, who retired from MMA for an indefinite period at the end of last year, was the end of the line for hopes that the Canadian would one day fight again. But the scenario could be much more encouraging. According to GSP's coach, Firas Zahabi, the injury has kept the athlete even more stimulated and this is the main reason that makes him believe in his return to the octagon.
“I think he will fight again. There's still a lot of that fire in him. Especially now with the injury. He is more motivated than ever. He was about to do it again sparring again, before the injury. I think there is still a lot of martial arts in him”, said the leader of “Tristar Gym Montreal”, in an interview with the “MMA Fighting” website, shortly after UFC 174.
At 33, Georges St Pierre has a record of 25 wins and two losses. The Canadian was welterweight champion twice, most recently between 2008 and 2013. After winning John hendricks at the UFC's 20th anniversary event in November last year, GSP decided to step away from the sport and relinquish the title.
