Moments after the end of Bellator 120, last Saturday (17), the organization's director, Bjorn Rebney, hinted that Michael chandler he could complete the trilogy against Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt even if he lost to Will Brooks for the interim title. This is because Rebney stated that Alvarez has a contract clause which guarantees him the right to request a fight against Chandler if he wants.

In an interview with the North American website Bloody Elbow, Alvarez responded to his boss and stated that the decision about his next opponent does not concern him. “To be clear, I have never, ever picked an opponent. I always had my opponents chosen by the organization. I never had a preference. They simply told me who I would fight, and I did. I want to make it clear that, regardless of what was written in my contract, Bellator wrote it. If it says that I have to face Michael chandler again, it’s because Bellator wants things to go that way”, explained the champion.

Alvarez stated that, if it were up to him, his next fight would be against Brooks, as that would characterize a fairer scenario. “I think it's fair and right that I fight Will Brooks. I don't think it would be fair for me to face someone who is coming off a defeat when there is a guy with the interim belt. But whoever they choose, it’s not my decision and never has been,” he added.

Alvarez would fight Chandler at Bellator 120, but had to withdraw from the fight at the last minute after suffering a concussion during training. They have already faced each other twice: in 2011, Chandler won by submission, and last year, Alvarez got the fight back and won the judges' split decision.
