Even months after the announcement of his withdrawal from the fight against Chris Weidman for the belt in the up to 84 kg category and replacement for his compatriot Lyoto Machida, Vitor belfort Don't get the middleweight champion out of your head. The “Phenomenon” is still looking to regain his status as number one challenger in the division and to do so he challenged Weidman to a duel in Brazil.
“Weidman already has an opponent, it’s me, contend (challenging, in English) number one. Where are you, my brother? Come to Brazil! Wherever we want, I'm behind you. Get ready, my brother”, said Vitor, who also made the cut throat sign for the camera, in an interview with the “MMA Space” website. Belfort also provoked his rival by saying that Weidman “already has an opponent, he’s running away!”
Despite the challenge, Belfort, who has not played since the victory over Dan Henderson in November last year, he was moderate in his expectations regarding his possible return to the octagon. “I think 'ready' is something that takes time. It's a project. You be in camp, weight and everything. But training, I never stopped. We're on the journey, we've conquered our space and now (I'm) waiting for the contract to arrive, for us to sign it and move forward”, said the carioca.
At 37, Vitor belfort has a record of 24 wins and ten losses. After three consecutive victories in 2013, over Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold e Dan Henderson, all by knockout in the first round, Belfort qualified to fight for the middleweight belt against the champion Chris Weidman. After the ban on TRT in MMA, however, Vitor, who was undergoing treatment, had to leave the fight.
