Keeping an eye on the UFC's intentions, Chael Sonnen decided to make a bold statement and revealed that strong rumors point to a possible change of opponent for the first title defense of the Jon Jones. According to the commentator, Ultimate will leave Stipe Miocic aside and will climb the great highlight of the moment, Sergei Pavlovich. Although 'Bones' expresses his desire to fight the Croatian, it is possible that the paths are being redirected.
“I'm hearing strong rumors... Stipe x Jones goes to space, and Sergei Pavlovich against Jones could happen in August. I'm hearing strong rumors about this. Strong enough that I can say it's at least being discussed. I don’t know where they are agreeing, but this is at least being discussed”, declared Sonnen in an interview with Brendan Schaubb.

Victorious in his last performance, when he became UFC heavyweight champion (up to 120,2kg), Jon Jones declared that he did not plan to extend his career for a long time and that the plan would be to fight against Stipe Miocic and then retire. When asked about a possible fight against Pavlovich, 'Bones' chose the fight as “high risk and low reward”, in addition to pointing out the Russian's low notoriety.
Riding on six consecutive victories in Ultimate, all via knockout in the first round, Sergei is seen as 'the fighter to beat'. At 31 years old, the athlete has 18 triumphs and one setback in his career. The defeat came when he debuted in the organization and was knocked out by Alistar Overeem.
