Michael McDonald will have to wait a little longer to erase the defeat in his last fight. The American discovered an injury to his hand, which, despite its nature not being defined, is expected to leave him out of action for an indefinite period of time.
In December last year, McDonald suffered his third defeat in MMA when he was submitted by Urijah faber. He discovered the injury when he was working on a hobby, carpentry, realizing that he could not hold objects with his right hand with the same strength as with his left hand. “There's a huge bump on my hand, and when I throw punches, that's where it hurts. This has caused me to lose strength. Doctors think it's a tendon injury. I have another month of rest before I can have an MRI,” said McDonald, in an interview with the “FOX Sports” website.
However, the fighter doesn't look down on the possibility of being away from fights for months. “Believe it or not, it pleases me, actually. Fighting is a job that requires you 24 hours a day. Even when you sleep or eat, you are working, so there is no rest when you struggle. I had six, seven months of uninterrupted work and I knew that, if I beat Faber, I would have four more months like that. Of course, losing sucked. I’m not saying it was nice to lose, but it’s nice to take a break,” he said.
Despite coming off a defeat and being away from fights, McDonald currently occupies second place in the UFC bantamweight rankings, behind only Faber. The category champion is Brazilian Renan Barao.
