In the hunt for opponents, Khamzat Shimaev 'forgot' the recent challenges to Alex Poatán and pointed out a new target in the UFC. In an interview with 'Red Corner', the organization's bet challenged Robert whittaker for a clash. Despite showing respect to the former middleweight champion (up to 83,9kg), the fighter explained why a confrontation would make sense.
“I think I will face Robert whittaker. He has no opponent. Paulo Costa (Borrachinha) ran away after provoking us. So I'm going to face Whittaker. I want this fight,” said Chimaev.

The athlete, however, avoided provoking the New Zealander. The Swede made a point of paying respect to the former champion of the division led by Alex Poatán.
“I respect him as a human being. He's a solid guy and doesn't provoke, doesn't cross the limits. Let’s have fun at the press conference and have a confrontation”, he concluded.
On social media, Khamzat also 'forced' the commitment. The athlete released a montage and continued insisting on the fight.
“The good guy versus the bad guy. Let’s make it happen”, published the Swede, in his Profile on Instagram.
Current number three in the welterweight division (up to 77,1kg), Chimaev has not performed since the controversial UFC 279. On that occasion, the athlete would face Nate diaz in the main fight, but, after grossly failing to make the weight cut, he ended up having his opponent changed, facing and beating Kevin holland.
Former middleweight leader, Whittaker last fought in September 2022. In the octagon, the New Zealander had a dominant performance against Marvin vettori, remaining the highlight of the category.
