A pioneer of MMA and mixed martial arts, Brazil could be the birthplace of another novelty in the world of combat sports: “Double Fighting”. The modality, announced through a video on the promotion's official channel, involves four athletes simultaneously in a cage, divided into two teams of two fighters who duel each other. Although the presentation material is more than six minutes long, some details, especially about the rules, are still not so clear.

In an interview with the North American website “MMA Fighting”, Carlos Nacli, director of “Double Fighting”, admitted that the idea was often confused with the pro wrestling (known in Brazil as “Telecatch”). “Ever since I came up with this idea, people always ask me, 'Is it the same as pro-wrestling'? I did several studies and realized that no one had done anything like this in MMA. I wanted to create something unique and new, bringing something better to MMA. Two fighters facing two other fighters, that's interesting. It’s what the audience wants to watch,” he said.

Also according to Nacli, the attempt to avoid direct competition with events already established in MMA motivated the emergence of “Double Fighting”. “The UFC has a monopoly on MMA (…) and I always wondered how to enter this market, where there are already billionaires and several organizations in Brazil and around the world. If I had tried the conventional route, the answer would have been 'I don't have a chance'. But then the idea came: why can't I have two guys fighting two guys in the same cage? No one likes fighting teammates, but what if they fought together? The idea was ready, and all I needed was to create the rules and structure. We did several tests and finally held our first fight,” he concluded.
