Georges St Pierre, former UFC welterweight champion, believes that his pupil, the young Rory McDonald, should be the next challenger for the category belt.

MacDonald is coming off a victory over Demian Maia at UFC 170, held last weekend. Even though he struggled in the first round, the Canadian turned the game around and defeated the Brazilian with a unanimous decision from the judges.

With this, MacDonald recovered from the defeat suffered by Robbie Lawler, at UFC 167. Lawler will fight John hendricks for the category title, which has been vacant since St. Pierre decided to take a break from his career.

For the former champion, MacDonald deserved the title fight. “I truly believe Rory deserves to be the next title challenger. I think he deserves it and will be the new champion”, he said, in an interview with the North American website “MMA Junkie”. “The defeat for Robbie Lawler made Rory more experienced and skilled. He has all the tools to be a champion. I think he beat Lawler, who is one of the most dangerous guys in the category,” he said.

Even though he was temporarily retired from MMA, St. Pierre made himself available to help MacDonald if he faced the new champion of the category. “I wasn't interested in fighting Rory, and Rory wasn't interested in fighting me. Rory is my friend, it's like he was a brother to me, a training partner. I wish him all the luck. If he fights for the belt, I'll be in the gym to help him,” he said.
