Last Friday (31), in Ft. Lauderdale (USA), the violent outbreak of the fighter Thiago Silva took the MMA community by surprise. After a confusing episode that involved threats and attacks directed at his ex-wife Thaysa Kamiji and jiu-jitsu coach Pablo Popovitch, Thiago ended up arrested by the SWAT team (special tactical force of the United States police), in an action that ended up being broadcast in real time on North American TV. In an interview with the website “UOL”, Thaysa presented her version of the events and stated that her ex-husband used cocaine, and that her behavior would have become more aggressive under the influence of the drug.

“You know what I don’t understand? We had a healthy relationship, talking, each in our own space. It's been the last three weeks that he's been like this. I think this is a consequence of cocaine use. My marriage ended in December 2012. In our relationship, I had to deal with his imbalance and aggression. But I never went to the police to talk because I was afraid of the reactions. Even after I was attacked, I didn’t speak”, revealed Thaysa, who is also a jiu-jitsu fighter.

According to the ex-wife, the couple's neighbors already knew about the athlete's violent outbursts and were warned to call the police in such circumstances. “That’s what ended the marriage. The problem was cocaine. He always thinks he is above the law. The next-door neighbor knew that when I screamed, she was supposed to call the police. He had cocaine paranoia. He came to my house, cut off my clothes and pointed the gun at my head. I had already made some complaints, but I withdrew them, because I was scared,” he said, recounting an episode – the threat with a firearm – raised by the judge responsible for the case during the trial.

Thaysa, however, did not give details about the action of Thiago Silva which resulted in his arrest. The North American website “TMZ Sports” released a version of what happened in which it states that Thiago had stopped at the door of Pablo Popovitch's gym and called his ex-wife. “You have ten seconds to get Pablo out of there and if he doesn't come out, I'm going to go in and shoot everyone,” the fighter reportedly said, who suspected that she had cheated on him with the jiu-jitsu trainer. Popovitch reportedly left the place to try to defend Thaysa, but both managed to return to the gym and called the police.

Also to “UOL”, the lawyer for Thiago Silva, Scott Saul, refused to comment on the statements made by his client's ex-wife, due to the fact that his client is not being accused of drug use or domestic violence. The fighter remains in pre-trial detention and, so far, without the right to bail, as he is not a North American citizen and the judge responsible for the case was concerned about the possibility of the athlete fleeing to Brazil. Thiago is now awaiting the appeal so that he can respond freely to charges of aggravated assault, illegal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest.
