A few hours after being arrested for breaking into a gym and threatening his wife, the Brazilian Thiago Silva found himself before the criminal court of Broward County, Florida (USA). Thiago was cleared of attempted murder, but was placed in preventive detention without the right to bail.
According to judge John Hurley, responsible for the session, Thiago even pointed a firearm at his wife, but as he did not shoot, even though he had all the conditions to act in such a way, the situation would be characterized as aggravated assault. However, the other charges against Thiago were considered and the Brazilian was ordered into preventive detention. During the session, some threats made by the fighter to his wife were mentioned. According to Hurley, the athlete allegedly told his wife that he would hire someone to kill her and also sent a series of text messages with similar content.
The judge based his decision not to grant Thiago bail on the fact that the fighter could leave the United States before his trial. “The court decides to arrest Thiago Silva preventively because he could flee to Brazil, where he is a citizen and has a family, and could kill his ex-wife or Popovitch even without a weapon,” said Hurley. The judge also cited recent difficulties in extraditions from Brazil and pointed to this as yet another reason for not releasing the athlete.
During the trial, the judge responsible for the case demonstrated that he only had a vague idea of who the fighter was and questioned the great media attention to the incident. The judge also asked about the athlete's financial situation and heard from his lawyer that, despite having residence in the United States, if he does not fight at UFC 171, on March 15th in Dallas (USA), the Brazilian would be financially broke.
