Ricardo Lamas is willing to hit José Aldo several times to show the world that he is the best fighter in the UFC featherweight division. The North American and the Brazilian will face each other this Saturday (February 1st), in the co-main event of UFC 169, in New Jersey, in the United States.
Even though Aldo is one of the most dominant UFC champions today, Lamas says he is fully capable of overcoming the Brazilian more than once. “I'm going to take what's mine and, if I have to give him a rematch, I will. I don’t care if I have to beat him 100 times to prove that I’m better,” he said, in an interview with the North American website MMA Junkie.
Despite Aldo being one of the most feared strikers in the category, Lamas doesn't believe he will necessarily have to take his rival to the ground to win. “I don’t need to take the fight to the ground. I won't be desperate to do that. I think that's what people messed up and why he can defend so many takedowns: because people aren't working on their attacks. If I can't get him to the ground and we have to change the whole time, that's fine with me”, commented the North American.
Lamas revealed that he had devised a strategy to nullify Aldo's game, including a defense against the Brazilian's dangerous low kicks. “I changed my base a little. I'll point my front foot a little more outward, so if he throws that low kick, I just need to lift my leg to block, rather than turning and lifting my leg. If he takes a few shots and I block them, I don’t think he would keep shooting,” he bet.
