With the status of a free man, at least temporarily, the former heavyweight champion (up to 120,2kg) Cain Velazquez spoke out for the first time when he was released from prison. In a statement to the 'Kron 4' channel, the Mexican descendant said he felt 'blessed' and thanked his family and friends for their support throughout the turbulent period he has experienced in recent months.

“I just feel blessed. Ready to go home, be with loved ones, family, friends and take something positive from this whole situation. I just want to thank everyone who supported me. I love you all. Just always keep being better as a person, always do good things and make something positive out of this terrible situation. My family and I, we’re going to do this,” Cain said.

Understand the case

Cain had been in prison since February this year, after chasing and shooting a man accused of molesting a close relative. At the time, however, the American allegedly hit the target's stepfather, who was also in the car. He faced charges for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, purposely discharging a weapon and possession of a loaded firearm to commit a felony.

According to a decision last Tuesday (8), Velasquez was released upon payment of a bond of US$ 1 million (approximately R$ 5,6 million) and will respond to the case in freedom and with an 'electronic ankle bracelet', having to stay 300 meters away from Harry Goularte, Patrícia Goularte and Paul Bender – involved in the case. Compliance also provides for environmental psychological treatment, counseling and terms against the use of weapons.
