North-American Whitney Miller, elected Miss United States in 2012, surprised by announcing that she will begin a journey towards becoming a black belt in jiu-jitsu. According to the model, who is also a professional wakeboard surfer, her goal is to show that, with determination and perseverance, anyone can achieve their goals, even if they are a Miss in a physical contact sport.

“What I want to show is that you can go out there and do anything you want. If a beauty queen can achieve a jiu-jitsu black belt, even though she knows it will take a long time, no one has any more excuses”, explained the model, in a video posted online. “If I'm starting my journey now, you can start yours too in anything you want. Just go after your dream,” she continued.

However, even though her goal is noble, she revealed that her family did not react well to her decision. “It was a trip, to say the least. My mother was crying and my father, an old banker from Texas, said he was stupid and didn’t understand,” she said.

Even though the black belt is still a long way off, Whitney has already participated in competitions and even won two medals: a silver, in submission (without a gi) and a gold, with a gi.
