Former rival, Thiago Marreta warns Jon Jones about moving up to UFC heavyweight

Brazilian, who came to measure forces against the North American, says that 'Bones' could have a job adapting to a new category

Former light heavyweight champion (up to 93kg.) and considered, by many, as one of the biggest names in UFC history, Jon Jones There is still no date for his debut in the heavyweight category (up to 120,2kg.). The change, in fact, has been prepared for more than two years and, for the former rival Thiago Marreta, can make a difference.

In an exclusive interview with the SUPER FIGHTS no 'YouTube’, Marreta warned Jones about the difficulty in moving up the category, requiring special adaptation. The Brazilian, who is the PFL's new signing, analyzed 'Bones' style and indicated that the North American may have problems in a possible fight against Cyryl Gane.

“Adaptation is necessary, changing training and load. (…) for me, the most difficult fit is Gane. He's a heavyweight who moves, fights on his toes all the time. One of the strategies I used against Jones was movement. I don't believe he moves like a heavyweight anymore. He normally doesn't move much. Gane can complicate it,” said Marreta.

Thiago Marreta he already had the opportunity to share the octagon with the then light heavyweight champion. At the UFC 239, in July 2019, the Brazilian had one of the greatest performances of his career. Even with a fantastic performance, the Tupiniquim athlete was unable to dethrone the North American and was defeated in a split decision by the judges.

Champion with the most defenses in UFC history, alongside Demetrious Johnson, Jon Jones has not performed since February 2020, when he managed the eleventh defense of the light heavyweight belt against Dominick reyes. With contractual issues to be resolved with Ultimate, the champion chose to leave the belt vacant, step aside and return as a heavyweight.
