The Association of Boxing and Combat Sports Commissions (ABC) brought news to the world of MMA. With the intention of reducing incidents that could lead to unwanted outcomes due to illegal blows to the eyes, the entity decided to intervene and adopted a unified rule that will be used in confrontations. The decision taken this Wednesday (27th) directly interferes with the actions of the match referee. The statement was released by 'Combat Sports Law'.

From now on, in the event of an illegal blow to the eyes of a certain athlete, he or she will have five minutes to recover. The new system follows the existing one for attacks on the genital region of combatants.

Previously, the stoppage of the fight, as well as the rehabilitation time of a fighter, was determined by the referee. Its function was to assimilate when the fight could be resumed.

With five pre-determined minutes for the combatant to recover, if he is not in a position to continue in the dispute, the fight will be interrupted. Victory, defeat or 'I didn't answer', however, will be determined by the round in which the incident occurred.

The new rules presented by ABC are considered unified for MMA in general. Adopting them, however, will depend on individual commissions that may vary from one promotion to another.
