Confirmation of the duel between Khamzat Shimaev e Nate diaz as the main attraction of UFC 279 divided opinions in the world of MMA. While some are confident in the combat's entertainment potential, many see a clear imbalance in favor of the naturalized Swedish Chechen. During an interview given backstage at the UFC London, last Saturday (23), Leon edwards criticized the choice of Chimaev as an opponent for the likely farewell of Nate diaz of Ultimate, but declared his support for the North American.
“If I had to put money into the fight, I would probably go with Khamzat (Chimaev), but I would love for Nate (Diaz) to do the job. He did so much for the organization and I wish they would have given him a veteran, cool fight to be revered. Give him a guy who is on the rise, with four or five fights in the UFC, a wrestler, I think they f***ed it up. They should have given him a better fight. I would love for Nate to win, but like I said, if I was a betting guy, I would probably bet on Khamzat,” Edwards said.
Leon edwards e Nate diaz shared the octagon for five rounds in the UFC 263, in June 2021. Winner in the judges' unanimous decision, the Brit declared himself a fan and wished the North American that he could achieve his goals away from Ultimate.
“You can't not like Nate. He is who he is. I watched this guy when I was 16 or 17 and starting out in MMA. I wish him all the best in his career and that he can do whatever he wants next. Boxing with Jake Paul or whatever he wants to do”, he concluded.
