No champion since Charles of the Bronx lost the belt after failing to make weight at the controversial weigh-in for the fight against Justin gaethje, UFC 274, the lightweight division has an unknown in its future. Responsible for Makhachev's career, businessman Ali Abdelaziz recently suggested that Ultimate marks the next title fight between the Russian and Beneil Dariush, another of his agents, in October, while Charles of the Bronx rests.
“If Charles Oliveira is not ready to fight in October, it is very simple. The division does not have a champion. Islam makhachev vs Beneil Dariush. Charles can face the winner. He deserves a rest”, wrote the businessman on social media.
Owner of a sequence of ten victories and undefeated since 2015, Islam makhachev currently occupies fourth place in the lightweight rankings, behind only Justin gaethje e Dustin poirier, names already defeated by Charles of the Bronx, in addition to the Brazilian himself. Against the Russian, however, the fact that he has not faced any fighter from the current top 10 in the division weighs heavily.
Beneil Dariush, in turn, is sixth in the lightweight rankings. Born in Iran, but naturalized in the United States, the 33-year-old athlete has a streak of seven wins and has not lost since March 2018.
