Herb Dean was the target of much criticism after the interruption that resulted in the technical knockout victory of Alexander Volkov about Jairzinho Rozenstruik in the main fight of UFC Las Vegas 56, held last Saturday (4). While many believe that the referee interrupted too soon, there are those who judge the decision he made as “perfect”.

UFC bantamweight champion (up to 61,2 kg), aljamain sterling, on his official YouTube channel, came to the defense of Herb Dean and praised the interruption made by the central referee in last Saturday's event.

“The fight was fun while it lasted. Rozenstruik had his moments, he tried to go for the fatal blow, but was caught with a right hand and then a brutal uppercut against the fence. Watching it, it felt like he lost his legs twice, and when you do that, even if you stay standing, the fight is over because there's a disconnect between your brain and your body and you can't respond. Rozenstruik recovered really quickly, but when you go back and watch the interruption, I don't think it was bad. I think it would only get worse, because Volkov, in that split second in which Jairzinho recovered and the referee interrupted, would continue to throw more blows and cause an even worse interruption than it was”, said Sterling.

aljamain sterling praised the recovery capacity of Jairzinho Rozenstruik, but opined that, had he continued in the fight, the Surinamese heavyweight could have suffered more serious damage and even been out of competition for longer.

PUBLICITY:

“Good for Jairzinho that he was able to recover quickly. It shows that he's in good shape, but I think there's a very fine line between the referee letting you live to fight another day and letting you be punished to the point where you probably won't be able to fight anytime soon, because the blows and the damage you received will be much worse when accumulated. So I believe the referee made a good choice, jumping in the middle when he saw that he lost his leg twice (…) I think it was a perfect interruption”, he concluded.
