Veteran wins after almost five years and retires opponent at UFC Las Vegas 56

Karolina Kowalkiewicz finishes with a rear-naked choke and breaks a streak of five defeats; Felice Herrig announces retirement after 20 years of career

At the end of the preliminary card, in a fight valid for the strawweight division (up to 52,1kg.), Karolina Kowalkiewicz e Felice herrig measured forces in UFC Las Vegas 56 this Saturday (4). The Polish was superior and submitted in the second round, while the North American left her gloves in the octagon and announced her retirement.

“It was an honor to be in the UFC for eight years and fight for 20 years. I had two serious surgeries and I didn't want to end up like this (…). I wish I could overcome all this and return to my best level. The energy was great, but I knew that if I felt bad, it would be my last fight. It’s sad, but the time has come to retire”, said the athlete, who leaves the sport at 37 years old.

Herrig experienced the peak of his career in 2016, when he achieved a streak of four straight victories over names like Alexa grasso and Justine Kish. Subsequently, however, she suffered four setbacks in a series and chose to leave the sport with a record of 14 positive results and ten negative results.

Kowalkiewicz, in turn, is back. After more than five years, the Pole reached her 12th victory and is breathing a sigh of relief after breaking the fourth worst series without victories in the organization's history. She also has seven losses.

In the first round, Herrig tried to put the fight down and saw Kowalkiewicz make the defense, as well as working good strikes in his striking. The Polish came back even better in the second round, applying good elbows in the grappling fight and transitioning to the rear naked choke until the North American gave up. With her triumph, she cried in the octagon.
