Canelo earned US$90 million (around R$465 million, at current prices) and was in eighth place on the overall list. He is the only sports representative among the highest paid in the world. The ranking takes into account the prizes received by athletes, such as money, bonuses and salaries between the period of May 2021 and May 2022.
The 'good news' arrives to soften the event in which Canelo participated last Saturday (7). The main boxing star today, the Mexican was surprised by Russian Dmitry Bivol and lost a unanimous decision in a fight for the World Boxing Association (WBA) light heavyweight belt.
The fighter was defeated for only the second time in his career – the only one in eight years. Now, Alvarez has a record of 57 wins, two draws and two defeats.
Important absences
At the top of the list in 2021, Conor McGregor did not appear among the top ten. The Irishman, who had pocketed around US$180 million (R$924,73 million) in total, counted together with the sale of his Irish whiskey brand, Proper No. Twelve. The 'Notorious' should appear in the complete ranking of the 50 highest paid athletes of 2022, which will be published at the end of this month.
In preparation for return to the 'global titans', an event that takes place next Saturday (14), Floyd Mayweather was already at the top in 2018, but he also did not appear among the biggest of the year. The boxer has not competed since June 2021, when he drew against YouTuber Logan Paul.
