The main fight of Bellator 278 ended with controversy and with one less belt for Brazil. Juliana Velasquez was defeated by Liz Carmouche by technical knockout in the fourth round after a controversial interruption by referee Mike Beltran.
Superior in the fight, Ju Velasquez ended up being taken down by Liz Carmouche in the final stretch of the fourth round. On top, the North American managed to lock the Brazilian's arms and release a few elbows. Despite appearing calm, Velasquez was unable to properly defend himself from Carmouche's blows and referee Mike Beltran chose to stop the fight.
The controversial defeat was the first in the career of Juliana Velasquez, who won her first 12 fights in MMA. The Rio native loses the flyweight belt in her attempt to defend her second title.
Veteran, Liz Carmouche becomes champion at 38 years old. The American debuted in Bellator in 2020 and won the four fights she had for the organization.
