Edwards mocks Masvidal's moment, but admits giving the athlete a title shot if he becomes champion

Involved in a fight with Jorge in 2019, the Englishman suggests that his rival's best phase has passed and questions his future in the sport

Involved in a fight with Jorge masvidal in 2019, behind the scenes at UFC London, Leon edwards he didn't miss the opportunity to tease his rival about the bad moment in his career. Ultimate favorite to challenge Kamaru Usman for the welterweight belt (up to 77kg.), the Englishman needled 'Jesus das Ruas', criticizing his performance against Colby covington and questioning the veteran's future in MMA.

“Masvidal gets into the octagon and does his best for two, three minutes. If the fight doesn't go his way, he calms down until he loses. That's exactly what he did (against Covington, in the UFC 272). He always do that. (….) It seemed like I was just there for the money,” said Edwards, in an interview with 'ESPN'.

Willing to provoke Masvidal, Leon followed. According to the Englishman, Jorge's career was marked by a big moment in 2019.

“He had a good season and 'surfed the wave'. That was it and it was over,” he said.

Even understanding that 'Jesus das Ruas' cannot perform at an elite level for welterweights, Leon ended up surprising. Favorite to face Kamaru Usman In the champion's next title defense, the Englishman does not rule out facing off against Masvidal.

“He comes from three consecutive defeats. I must win the belt and I can ask to defend it against Jorge. It would be a big pay-per-view and I would beat him up,” he signed off.

Masvidal's loss to Covington marked the third consecutive stumble in the veteran's career, something unprecedented until then. Edwards, in turn, is going through a great phase, boasting a streak of 10 fights without losing.

Standouts from the welterweight division, Jorge and Leon would face off in the UFC 269, which took place in December 2021. 'Jesus das Ruas', however, ended up suffering an injury and was forced to leave the event.
