Cain Velasquez is denied bail and will remain jailed on attempted murder charges

The judge in the case, Shelyna Brown, stated that the case involves a risk of extreme recklessness to human life and therefore denied the right to bail.

Former UFC heavyweight champion (up to 120,2kg), Cain Velazquez remains in prison after being denied bail at a hearing that took place this Monday (7), in Santa Clara, California, in the United States. The judge in the case, Shelyna Brown, condemned the former fighter's actions as reckless to human life. A new hearing in the case is scheduled to take place on April 12.

“It is clear to the court that there is clear and convincing evidence that the release will result in great bodily harm, not only to the complaining witnesses named in this case, but to the residents of Santa Clara in general. This case involves allegations of extreme recklessness to human life. (…) Anyone could have been hurt. Anyone could have been killed and when this court looks at the article 1, section 12, it is this level of risk that the court must take into account. With that said, this court is deciding that the risk is too great and that there will be no bail set at this time,” the judge ruled.

Cain has now been accused of premeditated murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle, as well as assault with a firearm and intentionally discharging a projectile into a vehicle, with the intent to commit a crime.

If found guilty, he could face a sentence of 20 years in prison, with the possibility of it being extended to life.
