Covington dominates Masvidal and beats rival on points in the main fight of UFC 272

In a fight between friends, Colby abuses grappling and overcomes Jorge in a clash between former friends in the main fight

Jorge masvidal promised a massacre, but what prevailed in the main fight of the UFC 272 was the tactical game of Colby covington. In the confrontation between former friends, 'Caos' fought a tactical fight, abused the grappling and canceled his opponent's striking to be declared the winner in the judges' decision. The event took place this Saturday (5), in Las Vegas (USA).

With the victory, Covington recovered from the defeat suffered by Kamaru Usman. In addition to returning to the path of positive results, the North American defended the first position in the ranking of the under-77kg group. Today, 'Caos' is second only to the champion in the division.

Widely dominated in UFC 272, Masvidal ended up getting even more complicated in the category. Now, the 'Jesus of the Streets' has made three stumbles in a row and has moved away from the chance to return to the top 5 in the welterweight division.

After the official announcement, Colby made no secret of what he intends to do next in his career. In a loud and clear tone, the former interim champion challenged Dustin poirier, another former partner of Americano Top Team and another public enemy.

The fight

The confrontation began with Masvidal risking a flying knee, which went empty. Colby responded with an overhand, which also missed his opponent. After just over a minute, the former interim champion looked for his legs and tried to apply a takedown to his opponent. Covington tried to dominate the back, while Jorge protected himself as best he could. Masvidal got to his feet, but was put down again by his former friend. Colby started to try a rear naked choke and Jorge just protected himself. The confrontation continued with Covington's advantage and Masvidal was unable to produce much. In the final minute, Jorge managed to get to his feet and went after his opponent, but there was no more time.

In the second stage, Jorge took the initiative with an overhand, which went empty. Covington responded with a high kick. The attack did not touch the opponent and caused the former interim champion to lose his balance. Colby stayed on his feet and the fight returned to striking. Masvidal began to loosen up in the confrontation and threw combinations of punches and kicks at his opponent. After just over a minute, Covington returned to the takedown, and began to press his former friend against the bars. The fight was momentarily interrupted after a low blow from Colby. On the way back, the fighters started to engage in frank exchanges. The public cheered with each attack made by the protagonists. Near the final minute, Covington took a shot, but ended up losing his balance. Masvidal went up, but ended up having his position reversed by his opponent. Jorge managed to stay on his feet and the athletes returned to battle. At the end of the stage, Covington had the better of the exchange and, afterwards, pressed his opponent against the bars again. Jorge moved away and responded with combinations to his opponent's body. Near the end, Jorge made a comeback after a direct shot from his former friend, but there was no more time.

The third round began with Masvidal risking a high kick, which exploded in Covington's guard. In response, Colby went for a grapple, but Jorge managed to free himself. Just over a minute into the fight, Covington got the takedown and was working on ground and pound. The former interim champion attacked with elbows and set his pace in the fight. From below, Jorge tried to resist his opponent's attacks. With just over a minute remaining, Covington continued to 'surpass' in the confrontation and dominated the actions. Almost at the end of the stage, Colby tried to get to the back and attempted the rear naked choke. Jorge protected himself and tried to prevent his former teammate's attacks. In the final seconds, Masvidal managed to free himself and landed two straight shots on his opponent, but the timer ran to zero.

In the fourth round, Masvidal threw a cross, which went empty. 'Jesus das Ruas' launched two more kicks, but the attacks stopped in Covington's guard. In response, Colby looked for his opponent's legs and attempted the takedown again. Jorge managed to defend himself, but his opponent remained 'sticky'. Halfway through the stage, Jorge managed to free himself and the athletes started to exchange franks. Covington had the advantage and rocked his former friend with a tough series of crosses. Later, Colby returned to grappling. Near the final minute, Masvidal rocked Covington with a cross. The duel became tense, with both fighters looking for a knockout. The stage ended with the athletes studying each other in the center of the Octagon.

The last round began with Covington feinting attacks and, subsequently, taking his opponent down. With plenty of time to work on top, the former interim champion looked for transitions and rehearsed the rear naked choke. Masvidal managed to stay on his feet, but Colby remained glued to his back. As the minutes passed, Jorge showed signs of tiredness and produced little in the match. Colby kept trying to get to the back and looked for the choke. With just over a minute left until the end of the fight, Jorge was unable to react and Colby continued to have more volume in the confrontation. Close to the end of the confrontation, Colby continued attacking, but there was no more time.
