Cain Velasquez faces ten charges and could face 20 years to life in prison if found guilty

Former heavyweight champion is accused of attempted murder against man who allegedly molested a child in his family

Last Wednesday (2), Cain Velazquez received ten formal charges related to the shooting last Monday night (28), in San Jose, California (USA). The former UFC heavyweight champion (up to 120,2 kg) was charged with premeditated attempted murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, three counts of assault with a firearm, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, intentionally discharging a weapon firearm from inside a vehicle and carrying a loaded firearm with the intent to commit a crime.

Other details of the incident were also revealed, in which Cain Velazquez targeted Harry Eugene Goulart, a 42-year-old man accused of molesting children, including a close relative of the former heavyweight champion, at a daycare center run by his mother.

According to information from the North American “ESPN”, Goularte was released from prison on February 25 and sentenced to house arrest, having to stay 100 yards (approximately 91 meters) from any child under 14 years old. Prosecutors allege that Goularte was with two people in the car on his way to get his electronic monitoring bracelet when he was chased by Cain Velazquez.

According to the district attorney's office, Cain Velazquez he allegedly chased Goularte, at high speed, for approximately 18 km, crashed and shot the car “multiple times” with a 40 caliber revolver. The former champion was arrested shortly afterwards during a traffic stop.

“The sad tragedy is that Mr. Velasquez chose to take justice into his own hands, putting the public and everyone in the car at risk. This act of violence also causes further pain and suffering to his family,” said Attorney Jeff Rosen.

If found guilty of attempted murder, Cain Velazquez he could face a minimum of 20 years in prison and could spend the rest of his life in prison with the additional time on the other charges.
