Jon Jones says he's in no rush to fight as a heavyweight

Saying he still has work to do in his category, light heavyweight champion postpones change

Amid speculation about champions changing categories, one of them put the brakes on the matter. Light heavyweight champion and number one in the UFC weight-for-pound rankings, Jon Jones He said he is not thinking about switching to the heavyweight division, at least for now.

Jones' statement came this Tuesday, during a press conference in Los Angeles. The event was part of the UFC World Tour, when the organization will take four champions who will fight in the last months of the year, together with their respective challengers, to promote the latest events in pay-per-view of 2013.

“I'm not thinking about moving up to heavyweight if I win this fight. I still have a lot to do in my category. Look at this guy next to me,” said Jones, sitting next to Cain Velazquez. “Would you like to face him? I don't know, guys. I don't know".

Shortly after, Jones explained the change of plans, as the fighter himself had previously said that the change of category was something to happen by 2014. “I said that because Cain was by my side. I didn’t want it to be weird”, laughed the fighter while talking to the MMA Fighting website. “Eventually (I will move up). I'm getting older, I'm growing, I'm getting stronger. Why not? Yes definitely."

The UFC World Tour brought Jones and Alexander Gustafson (who will face each other at UFC 165, in September) with Cain Velazquez e Junior Gypsy (who fight at UFC 166 in October), Georges St Pierre e John hendricks (who measure forces at UFC 167, in November), in addition to Ronda Rousey e Miesha Tate (who will step into the Octagon at UFC 168 in December). The next press conference is scheduled for this Wednesday, in New York.
