The year is coming to an end and that time has come to think about everything we've been through so far. It is in this climate that the SUPER FIGHTS prepared a super retrospective with all the best things that happened in the world of fights in 2021.

Today we're going to remember the ten best submission victories of the year. In 2021, the gentle art presented us with new champions, belt defenses, comebacks, historic upsets and much more. Let's go to the list (in chronological order)!

Anthony Hernandez x Rodolfo Vieira – UFC 258

The first conclusion to the list was one of the most shocking of the year. At the UFC 258, in February, anthony hernandez surprised and submitted Brazilian Rodolfo Vieira, five-time world champion and a true legend in the gentle art. The defeat was the only one in the “Black Belt Hunter”’s MMA career to date.

The end of the year was not good for Amanda nunes, as we will see later, but in March the “Leoa” had already secured her place on the list. At the UFC 259, the Brazilian he took no notice of Megan Anderson and two minutes into the fight he managed to submit via armbar to defend his featherweight belt for the second time (up to 65,7 kg) of Ultimate.

Also in March, in UFC 260, Vincent Luque once again showed his “killer instinct” and gave former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley no chance, finishing the fight in the first round with his traditional hand triangle. The loss to the Brazilian marked Woodley's last appearance in the octagon. After that, the former Ultimate champion became better known as the man who lost to the YouTuber Jake Paul (twice).

André Sergipano x Ronaldo Jacaré – UFC 262

In May it was time to André Sergipano shock the world. In his third fight in the octagon, at UFC 262, the 31-year-old athlete not only finished Ronaldo Jacaré, but also broke the veteran's arm, who said goodbye to MMA after the defeat.

Winning by submission is great. Winning a title fight is also great. Win a rematch? Excellent. And all this at the same time? That's what happened with Brandon Moreno No. UFC 263. The Mexican submitted Brazilian Deiveson Figueiredo with a rear naked choke and became the new flyweight champion (up to 56,7 kg) of Ultimate.

AJ McKee x Patrício Pitbull – Bellator 263

Proving that MMA exists outside of the UFC, Bellator also had a year full of big events. One of the main highlights was the organization's new featherweight champion, AJ MCKee, who won the belt by submitting Patrício Pitbull with a standing guillotine at Bellator 263, in July.

Khamzat Chimaev x Li Jingliang – UFC 267

One of the most talked about names in the last two years in world MMA, Khamzat Shimaev gave yet another demonstration of his overwhelming power in the UFC 267, in October. Returning from a long period away due to complications related to Covid-19, the Russian-born Swedish citizen he ran over Li Jingliang in the first round, ending the fight with a rear naked choke.

Also in the UFC 267, the world of MMA saw one of the most beautiful stories in the sport crowned. At 42 years old, Glover Teixeira became the oldest man to win an organization belt for the first time by submitting Poland's Jan Blachowicz with a rear naked choke in the second round.

Amanda nunes appears for the second time on the list, but in a completely opposite situation to the first. In the last numbered event of the year, in December, the “Leoa” was surprised and submitted by Julianna Peña, who became the new bantamweight champion (up to 61,2 kg), in one of the biggest upsets in the history of world MMA.

Finishing the list with a flourish, he couldn't miss it: Charles of the Bronx. Ultimate submission record holder achieved his most important submission via rear naked choke against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269, to defend the organization's lightweight belt (up to 70,3 kg) for the first time.
