Former featherweight champion (up to 65,7k), Max Holloway showed once and for all that he deserves the trilogy against the champion Alexander Volkanovsky. Before Yair Rodriguez No. UFC Las Vegas 42, the Hawaiian fought a 'war' and emerged victorious in the unanimous decision of the judges. The duel headlined this Saturday's show (13).
With the result, Holloway achieved his second consecutive victory and qualified for a new title fight. The Hawaiian now has a record of 23 wins and six setbacks in professional MMA. On the other hand, Yair Rodriguez sees its streak of two consecutive victories being broken and now has 13 positive results and three negative results in the sport.

The fight
Max started the duel by trying to corner Yair against the cage. The Mexican stumbled and fell, but soon got back on his feet. Rodriguez landed a low kick followed by two crosses on Holloway. The 'Pantera' landed two more low kicks but received a clean right to the face from a counter blow. The two athletes began to exchange blows openly in the center of the octagon. Yair grabbed Holloway's back and tried to put him down, but the former champion remained firmly on his feet. Pantera fell to the ground as he freed himself, Max tried to press him to the ground, however, the gong sounded that marked the end of the first round.
Holloway returned for the second half trying to put pressure on Yair, but took a clean right to the face. The Mexican provoked the former champion by keeping his guard down in front of him. Both fighters showed sharp boxing. Rodriguez tried to undermine his rival's base with more low kicks. Max tried to close the distance, but the Mexican proved dangerous with his counterattacks. Yair leans against the fence and gets a knee to the chest from Holloway. Yair loses his balance once again and is saved by the bell again.
Max continued to take control of the actions in the third round but the fight remained very open. Rodriguez goes to the ground and Holloway almost gets a submission on his rival. Above the Mexican, the former champion strikes Yair incessantly. The 'Pantera' desperately defends himself to avoid being finished or hit by the 'Blessed'. The two athletes get back to their feet and this time it's Rodriguez who tries to take down Max, who responds with a jab followed by a right. Max dives at Rodriguez's legs and takes him down, the former champion gets the mount and ends the round with ground and pound.
The fourth half started with Yair trying to land a stomp on Holloway's face. The two athletes flirted with danger and abused frank exchanges. Holloway tried to land a standing guillotine, however, Rodriguez is smarter and gets out of position. Max remains on top, striking at his rival's guard. The former champion passes guard again and gets the mount. The Mexican tried to survive the storm. Once back on his feet, Rodriguez tried to surprise Max with his spinning elbows. Unintentionally, Holloway punches Pantera in the eye. Yair starts trying high kicks followed by elbows to hit the blessed man.
The fifth and final round began with Yair trying to pressure Max but being responded to by a good sequence of combinations. Holloway cut short and landed a knee to Pantera's chest. Yair tries a spinning strike but is counterattacked and goes to the ground. Max tries to mount but Yair makes a beautiful transition and stays on top to try to finish the former champion. The two athletes return to striking and begin to show a little wear. Rodriguez tries a low kick and receives a straight shot in response. The fighters end the fight in the clinch, close to the cage.
