Varner is going through a very different phase to the Brazilian. When he lost the WEC belt, the American fell to a 1-4-1 record and ended up not participating in the event's transition to the UFC. Fighting in smaller organizations, Varner won three out of four fights and accepted a last-minute invitation to face the then undefeated Edson Barboza. With a sensational performance, the American ran over the Brazilian and knocked him out in the first round. In the next fight, another spectacular performance earned him the best fight of 2012, awarded the MMA Oscar, against Joe lauzon, who finished it in the third round. Varner got back on the winning track by passing Melvin Guillard in December.

With the addition of Tibau-Varner, UFC 164 now has ten official fights. The event will be headlined by the defense of the lightweight Ben henderson against TJ Grant, in addition to promoting Josh Barnett's return to the organization.
